Context:
The story behind the handmaid’s tale is that Margaret Atwood noticing the rise of religious extremism in America began to look at what it would look like for a fictional Theocratic government in the United States and how it’s rise would differ from other Theocratic states such as the Islamic Republic of Iran, so she went upon looking at Women’s history taking it upon herself to not create Traditions that have not happened already in the history of this nation and with the world.
the product I seen is the handmaid’s tale in my opinion a masterpiece in literature which creates a tapestry of events that draws the reader in and does not sugarcoat the reality of this unfortunate world.
Story:
The story follows the character Offred As in this story women who are so-called handmaids take the last name of high-ranking government officials named Commanders, now the role of so-called handmaids can only be defined as state sanctioned rape in order to replenish the population of the so-called Republic of Gilead which following in this world a collapse and fertility rates was established on the remnants of the US
we are taking to the beginning of when Gilead first was established and how are said main character was taken into this system That she has been thrown into and how her freedoms were taken away slowly and eventually to her thoughts and understanding of her situation which creates a vivid picture that draws the reader into sympathizing and despising the Republic of Gilead. and even the end of the book does not follow a fairy-tale ending; it leaves it ambiguous whether the character we’ve seen grow closer and closer to disillusionment and Rebellion has been struck down or saved.
The Point of this:
The point of the story is not merely to be aware of extremism it’s to not allow extremism to flourish as is seen in the novel many of the extremists that would soon take over the government were viewed out with apathy and little was done to curb their actions which is seen in history when totalitarian governments were established and how most individuals stood silently and watched as it happened. the novel also goes into the fact how people who even supported the system because they thought they would not be affected come into realization of their actions soon after it starts affecting them which I feel has a Major Impact in any political climate on how many only react when they are affected.
Now, overall, The Handmaid’s Tale is not a blueprint; it is merely a cautionary tale of what may happen if people allow the Liberties they hold so dear to be taken from them in the name of a crisis,s and never to allow authority to strip away your righ, ts andalways to be vigilant of malignant detractors and where they may be.
