From fighting over the draw to hastily picking up ground balls, the game of lacrosse is unlike any other. The historically indigenous sport contains various elements found in others, and since its origin in the 12th century, the sport has evolved from warrior training into a uniting force between diverse communities. Yet, the fighting spirit remains strong in our own Lady Condors, who traveled to Lynwood High School just this Tuesday for a dub to kick off their season.
Led by goals from midfielders Angelica Palomares and April Vasquez, our Condors put their training to the test and showcased what it truly means to strive for greatness. Freshman Annabella King commented on her perspective of the first game of the season, saying, “I honestly felt a little nervous going into the first game, but once I was on the field, I knew I was going to have a bunch of fun.” Additionally, junior Paige Rodriquez mentioned the importance of a positive mindset, “I believe my attitude greatly affects the team, being a returning player and a captain. I think my attitude is able to uplift and encourage others.” And after four quarters of continuous teamwork and fierce determination, our girls’ lacrosse team won by a score of 10-1.
But even in the face of triumph, challenges are to be expected. This is what the team faced in Friday’s game against Corona Centennial, where the odds were
seemingly stacked against them. Annabella noted that, “Practice is key, so when we’re late to warm-ups before a game, it can honestly affect how we work together on the field.” She further added how high-stakes the game felt, especially against a strong-spirited opponent.
Nonetheless, our Lady Condors gave it their all, returning back to a perseverant attitude when circumstances became tough. Despite the defeat, our Lady Condors are brushing it off, transitioning into the second week of the season with home games against Heritage Christian and El Modena. And as for the future, the team looks forward to not just success, but lasting memories as well. Senior Angelica Palomares quotes, “I try to keep a positive learning environment for the team so they’re not afraid to make mistakes, but rather just enjoy their time playing.”
