The Battle of the Boulevard never comes quietly—and Friday night was no exception. With a packed gym and rivalry energy buzzing from the opening tip, Cal High faced La Serna in a matchup that quickly turned into a test of grit, resilience, and heart. The audience was fully engaged on both sides, with very few phones in sight. Even the youngest fans made their presence known, shouting throughout the night. The most memorable came from a fourth-grade boy yelling from the balcony, engaging in playful trash talk by shouting, “Number 5, your shoe is untied!” Though the young fan may have been rooting for La Serna, the moment brought plenty of laughs from the Nest.
La Serna struck first, opening the game with a devastating eight-point run that briefly put Cal on its heels. For a moment, it seemed as though the Condors’ fate was sealed. But Cal refused to let the early deficit define them. As La Serna’s momentum threatened to widen the gap, Aham Nwosu emerged as a steady offensive presence, repeatedly answering baskets and keeping the Condors within striking distance. Despite early foul trouble for Jeremy Dayton, Cal began to settle into the game, finding rhythm and confidence as the first quarter unfolded.
With momentum swinging back and forth, Cal leaned heavily on contributions from Nwosu and Jair Linares to remain competitive. Though the Condors trailed after both the first and second quarters, their energy never wavered. The intensity carried into halftime, where PG Serenity and the Cal cheer team energized the crowd and set the tone for a second-half push. Cal continued to fight, determined to even the score.
The game’s most dramatic moments came in the final minutes of regulation. With exactly 1:08 remaining, Dayton delivered two crucial baskets to bring Cal level. Then, with 32.4 seconds left on the clock, Linares hit the most memorable shot of the night, tying the game at 72–72 and sending it into overtime. The Nest roared with excitement as belief surged through the gym.
The momentum, however, was short-lived. La Serna struck first in overtime and maintained control through the final minutes, eventually pulling away to secure an 83–76 victory over Cal High.
The intensity of the rivalry was felt throughout the entire program. Watching from the stands, JV player Shane Pocock described the matchup as “such a fun game to watch,” adding that while it “didn’t turn out the way we wanted,” it was still “a great game.” Despite the loss, Cal players emphasized the resilience they showed in battling back from an early deficit. “Honestly, I feel really proud of my teammates,” varsity player David Villa shared. “Even though we didn’t get the win, we fought hard and came back to force overtime. It goes to show that we’re a strong group that responds well to adversity and steps up to the challenge.”
