The church officials in Europe declared December 25th as the date because it was already a popular holiday called Saturnalia. Saturnalia was a Roman holiday dedicated to Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture and the harvest. People would celebrate this holiday by feasting and giving gifts, and they would also decorate their homes.

The Twelve Days of Christmas represent the time when the Wise Men went to look for Jesus after his birth. The Wise Men lived in the city of Jerusalem, where King Herod ruled. King Herod did not like that the Wise Men were interested in finding Jesus. Although the Wise Men did not know how to get to Bethlehem from Jerusalem, there was a star that helped them find the way. It took the Wise Men twelve days in total to find Jesus, and they did not meet him until January 6th. When they met Jesus, they saw him with his mother Mary; the Wise Men rejoiced happily and immediately bowed down to worship him. The Wise Men also brought three gifts for Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. After this, the Wise Men never went back to work for King Herod again.
