Christmas is a holiday that many Christians celebrate all over the world! It is about the day Jesus Christ, the Christian Lord and Savior, was born in Bethlehem. Christmas is celebrated annually on December 25th. Many cultures celebrate Christmas differently, such as eating foods from their own heritage. Some cultures celebrate on Christmas Eve (December 24th), while others celebrate on Christmas Day itself. Christmas is a holiday where lots of people spend time with their families, give each other gifts, play games, and take part in several family traditions.
Christmas began being celebrated in the 3rd century in Europe when church officials designated December 25th as Jesus Christ’s birthday. We still do not know the exact day Jesus was actually born. The church officials in Europe declared December 25th as the date because it was already a popular holiday called Saturnalia. Saturnalia was a Roman holiday dedicated to Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture and the harvest. People would celebrate this holiday by feasting and giving gifts, and they would also decorate their homes.
Some people celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas, a celebration that lasts from December 25th through January 6th. The Twelve Days of Christmas represent the time when the Wise Men went to look for Jesus after his birth. The Wise Men lived in the city of Jerusalem, where King Herod ruled. King Herod did not like that the Wise Men were interested in finding Jesus. Although the Wise Men did not know how to get to Bethlehem from Jerusalem, there was a star that helped them find the way. It took the Wise Men twelve days in total to find Jesus, and they did not meet him until January 6th. When they met Jesus, they saw him with his mother Mary; the Wise Men rejoiced happily and immediately bowed down to worship him. The Wise Men also brought three gifts for Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. After this, the Wise Men never went back to work for King Herod again.
In conclusion, Christmas is a holiday centered around Christianity and Jesus. It is a time to be around loved ones and family, to enjoy time together, and to end the year off together.
