A Thankful summary
A day for many of those to appreciate what they have and who they are with, a day of Celebration to the history that’s gone by in the histories to come, the day that the pilgrims and Native Americans feasted together, or a day of blood when the pilgrims took the land from the Native Americans and made it their own. Depending on the social background of the person, Thanksgiving could be none of these or allof these events, but this article is not you to talk about the modern-day understanding is Thanksgiving, butrather the historical standing of Thanksgiving, and to understand tha,t we must go to the first Thanksgiving(which is not a “free birds” reference)
A Divided House Uniting
When the Pilgrims landed on the shore in their ship, the Mayflower, they were almost helpless in the face of the differing soil of the new lands they happened upon; yet the natives who had lived in those lands for years had clear knowledge of the resources and methods of growing crops, and they shared their methods. And when their harvest bloomed, the two sides came together to enjoy a feast of diverse cultures, offering them a respite from what would come.
Path to the Modern Era
After the Pilgrims exterminated the natives whom they had once feasted with, the tradition of celebration with a feast continued, The U.S has a complicated history with this holiday, however its official basis can seen flowing around the time of George Washington, after his victory in the Battle of Saratoga a feast was celebrated during the winter, to which the national congress named the day one of prayer. Soon after the war, congress established the day as an official national holiday so that the American people could give thanks to god(as was common during this era where religion was prevalent).
Where it Stands Today
Centuries after its first appearance on the American continent, the traditions stayed relatively the same, a day of thanks and appreciation for any reason one can think of, a joyful time for family and friends, as well as a day to stuff oneself on turkey. Even if it may be overshadowed by the day of the jolly man in red, Thanksgiving is a day not only rich in food but history.
