Every student at Cal High begins their journey as a freshman, and while some enter with enthusiasm, others face the transition with trepidation. To offer guidance and insights, we spoke with current students and recent alumni.
Sophomore Rosa Holguin reflected on her freshman year, saying, “I was scared because I didn’t know anyone at the school besides my sister, but I was also excited about all the clubs and activities Cal has to offer.”
Senior Daniel Medina shared a similar sentiment: “I was nervous starting out in a new school with unfamiliar faces, but I found support from upperclassmen who helped me navigate the experience.”
New students often feel anxious about starting high school, but as Medina noted, there are plenty of upperclassmen willing to lend a hand. Freshmen should also remember they are not alone; many of their peers are experiencing the same uncertainty.
Marin Porter, a member of the Class of 2024, recounted, “My time at Cal High officially began as a sophomore due to the online learning environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, I was nervous, but as time went on, I found a home at Cal.” Porter emphasized the importance of getting involved: “Joining clubs and programs helped me meet people and shaped who I am today.”
Roxie Navarro, another recent graduate, advised, “The only thing I would have done differently is to be more proactive in joining clubs and activities. It’s the quickest way to make friends and feel more integrated into the school community.”
Navarro also offered this piece of advice: “Do your best in academics, sports, or whatever interests you, but remember not to take it too seriously. This is just one phase of your life, and making mistakes is part of the learning process. If you want to try something new, go for it!”
Medina echoed similar advice, saying, “Have fun throughout high school and don’t stress too much, but make sure to stay on top of your work.”
Porter emphasized the value of stepping outside one’s comfort zone: “Don’t be afraid to try new things. Don’t limit yourself just because you’re shy or scared. I was very shy my sophomore year, but by senior year, I was performing on stage. I’ve never regretted pushing myself out of my comfort zone.”
As freshmen embark on their high school journey, they can find comfort in knowing that their peers and predecessors have faced and overcome similar challenges, ultimately finding their place and thriving at Cal High.
