Ghostlight Theatre, California High School’s drama program, is gearing up for its most ambitious production yet: “Zoot Suit.” This powerful drama, based on the historical discrimination faced by Mexican-Americans in the 1940s, centers on the unjust arrest of a young man named Henry Reyna. The title references the iconic two or three-piece Zoot Suit, defined by its high-waisted, baggy trousers, oversized tacuche jacket, and Tando hat, popular among Mexican-American, African-American, and Filipino-American youth of the era.
While the play tackles heavy themes, the mood backstage is a mix of high-stakes pressure and friendly camaraderie as the November 2025 debut approaches.
The Rehearsal Rush
With less than a month to finalize the production, students, parents, and director Mr. Nguyen are intensely focused on memorizing lines, blocking scenes, and building the set. The pressure is on, but the cast is eager to perform.
Scott Labry, who plays LT Edwards, feels ready. “I pretty much memorized my lines,” he shared. “I like the emotions I can explore in this role, and I can’t wait to perform it on stage.”
Stage Manager Amber describes the rehearsal environment as “very friendly and lively. It’s like a judgment-free zone.” Despite the positive atmosphere, the reality of opening night brings nerves. “I’m excited that we almost have the finished product to show everyone, but also nervous because, like… yeah… I just get nervous,” Amber admitted.
Stress, Synergy, and Sweet Relief
The process of rehearsing on the cafeteria stage is nothing short of demanding. However, the theatre company has found ways to manage the stress and strengthen bonds, which is critical for trust on stage.
“Even though rehearsals are a lot, I look forward to spending time with the cast,” says Patricia Castillo.
During breaks, the students sit in a circle for ice-breaker activities. One rehearsal turned into a spontaneous dance party; another involved a lively discussion about favorite movies and musicals. This shared time is vital for developing the chemistry needed to bring a complex drama like Zoot Suit to life.
Although the stress is high and time is running low, the theatre environment remains welcoming. The students of Ghostlight Theatre can’t wait for the community to witness their hard work.
