Condors last week was spirit week. All in preparation for the rivalry football game at the end of the week. This past week was full of fun and other surprises. Here’s a recap of what happened.
MONDAY
Monday was a rest day, no school that day.
TUESDAY
Marvel vs. D.C. day. Condors wore their favorite superhero franchise and decided which superheroes were better, Marvel’s or D.C.’s. Tuesday was also a cold day, as it rained most of the day until it cleared up at lunch.
WEDNESDAY
Future vs. Past. Rather go to the Future or the Past? Condors dressed up as how they thought the future world would dress, and other Condors as how people dressed in the past.
THURSDAY
Country vs. Country Club. Lots of Cowboy hats, lots of visors. A nice day to have a hat, too, as it was the Great ShakeOut on Thursday as well. An earthquake drill that made everybody go outside. The Great ShakeOut had everyone go to a safe location outside by class and then to the stadium, where Condors would be separated by grade level on the field.
FRIDAY
Condor Madness. A day to rep your Condor spirit. Navy and Gold. There was an assembly on Friday to prepare for that night’s Condor football game. With many games and performances throughout the assembly that were great.
THE CONDOR FOOTBALL GAME
The Condors won the coin toss and chose to set the tone by receiving the ball first. But a 2-yard gain from Brian Padilla is all the Condors got, and they punted the ball. La Serna works their way from their own 38-yard line to the Condors’ 18. The Condors get a huge stop on 3rd down, but La Serna goes for it anyway on 4th down and scores a touchdown; the extra point was good. The Condors are down 7-0.
By the end of the 1st quarter, they would be down by 21, and 3 minutes into the 2nd by 28. The Kickoff results in a touchback. The Condors have the ball at the 20. Andrew Robledo and Alex Meza combine to run the ball on several plays, punctuated by a 15-yard run by Andrew Robledo to get to La Serna’s 39. A few plays later, a flag on La Serna, the Condors picked up 5 yards. With a minute left on the clock, the quarterback, AJ Aparicio, chucks one up to Rafael Toledo, incomplete. Going for the field goal, Brandon Covera’s kick is good.
La Serna works a good drive until Jayden Gonzalez gets an interception and takes it 50 yards, but not a lot of time left in the 1st half. The Condors get a few more yards, but with 2 seconds left, they kick a field goal, and the kick is good. At the half the score was 28-6.
Second Half
A minute into the second half, La Serna gets a touchdown. On the kickoff, Toledo picks up 44 yards. On a 3rd down and 1, there is an incomplete pass, but a holding flag on La Serna that gives the Condors a first down. Soon after a Alex Meza runs it in for a touchdown. The extra point is good, 35-13. La Serna gets the ball again and scores again, 42-13. The next Condor drive, Toledo and Robledo worked for good yardage, and the drive resulted in a touchdown for Robledo and a good extra point by Corvea, is good. 42-20 La Serna led in the 4th quarter. La Serna would then have a drive that would last for almost 10 minutes, but would end well for the Condors. As time was running down, La Serna switched quarterbacks, first throw right to a receiver who fumbles the ball. Rafael Toledo, with great instinct, recovers and runs the ball and run it all the way back to the nest and gets a touchdown. No flags. It goes in as a fumble recovery touchdown, and the extra point is good. The score 42-27 that score would stay, as there were only 2 minutes and 14 seconds on the clock. La Serna was too scared to find out how Cal High could come back in less than 2 minutes.
POSTGAME FROM THE SANDY
This football game was a special one; it marked the last divisional game against Cal High and La Serna. CIF is to restructure the league system for the 26-27 school year. As a result, the Del Rio League, which has been around since the 1992-93 school year, will be no more. Not just football, but all the other sports at Cal High, too. So this means no annual face-off between Cal High and La Serna, and potentially no match-up against La Serna for a few years. When these 2 teams meet again, be sure to be there in your Condor spirit and cheer for the Condors.
