A very large amount of the human population has a strong craving for anything but silence. When I say noise, I mean literally anything that is considered noise. Whether it be music, the tv, birds chirping, just all that you can hear. Our minds are sometimes our busiest parts. Our minds are like a busy train station in the middle of a huge calm meadow. When there is no noise, our minds wander freely. Some can’t ever stop thinking no matter how hard they try.
When we add noise, it brings a sense of calm to the mind. Like when you’re studying for a test and your brain is going through everything except what you are actually trying to recall, so you put on some music and now all of a sudden all you’re thinking about is the topic you’re studying. We are in a constant state of thinking, our brains rarely giving us a break. It doesn’t matter what it is that you’re thinking about, it could be memes or some poem you read when you were in the fifth grade, but we are always thinking about something.
Sometimes it becomes too much and causes things like headaches or exhaustedness. The noise is what keeps us from going crazy with our thoughts. If you’ve ever seen something with insane asylums, American Horror Story, Stranger Things, or The Mind, Explained, you’d know that one method they use to help the people in there stay calm, the people who have too many things in their heads, is music. It’s a calming tool that quiets the everlasting load of thoughts inside our heads.
We have so many things going through our minds, some of us having worse thoughts than others, noise is one of the best tools to help stop them before they make us go insane. In the night, when all is calm and there is rarely any loud noise (unless you have a neighbor that likes to party), the silence harbors your deepest thoughts. It brings out all that is too dark to think in the day with the bustle of everyday life. Sometimes when those thoughts bombard you and you have no way of getting them out of your head, you turn to noise. It could be white noise, asmr, or just having the tv on at a low volume. Just having that silence broken can help calm us to the point where the thoughts don’t even bother us at all.
Noise is the safe haven to escape the forever going train of thought we all have.
