Last Saturday, the Cal High Dance Program took the stage for their annual dance concert, Spellbound!. After a year of preparation—stretching, learning choreography, and attending rehearsals before, during, and after school—the dancers delivered a magical and memorable performance.
Each year, the concert features a unique theme, and this year’s theme was all about magic. Spellbound! included songs like “Enchanted,” “Dark Horse,” and “This Magic Moment.” The ballet segment was inspired by the Harry Potterfranchise, tying perfectly into the enchanting theme.
The show featured a variety of styles, including jazz, lyrical, tap, ballet, and hip-hop. Many dances were choreographed by Mrs. Fetrow and Mrs. Hood, while others were created by guest choreographers—many of whom were Cal High alumni. Some students even had the opportunity to choreograph their own pieces, whether solo or group numbers.
Audience reactions were overwhelmingly positive. Common comments included, “The show was really well done, and the lighting was amazing—it synced perfectly with the music,” and “You could really tell when someone was passionate about dancing.”
While passion varied, those deeply involved in the program clearly gained a lot from the experience. Dance isn’t always accessible, so having the opportunity to be part of a program like this at Cal High is a special privilege.
One standout number was Magic To Do, choreographed by a guest alumni choreographer and featured in the image above. Audience members loved the costumes and the dance’s confident, sassy energy. This piece even competed at a February dance competition.
Another crowd favorite was Genies, performed by Cal’s Performance Group (PG). The number featured a fusion of songs and distinctive “genie-like” arm movements, which captured the audience’s attention.
The Cal High Dance Program continues to shine. With one more competition left for PG, the dancers will wrap up the year with Pilates classes and lessons on social dances like the Charleston.

This was my favorite dance show ever! Loved the theme, and especially loved the Harry Potter ballet!
