Every Condor can say they’ve seen someone on campus walking around in a bright blue shirt with the words “LEARN” plastered. Some Condors may even say these people have entered their classroom to promote their new program. This may seem awkward but after taking an in-depth look at their teen center and tutoring sessions they offer, this new PREP program is useful to students struggling with schoolwork.
According to LEARN’s website, they are a non-profit organization that provides support to El Monte School District, El Monte Union High School District, Rosemead School District, Pomona Unified School District, and of course Whittier Union High School District, which is the school district that California High School is a part of. LEARN had its humble beginnings in 2004 through the Rio Hondo Education Consortium. Throughout the past 20 years, LEARN has reached out to many schools in Whittier, El Monte, Pico Rivera, Rosemead, and Pomona
With a background in mind, that leaves one question, “What is LEARN and their PREP Program doing here at California High School?”. PREP is a branch of LEARN; specializing in helping high school students. PREP offers after-school tutoring, college guidance, after-school clubs, and fun field trips. The PREP room also offers fun amenities such as a T.V., ping-pong table, a Nintendo Switch, fun games such as Twister, and many other fun activities. PREP is only here at Cal High simply to help students and provide them with the tools they need to succeed both academically and later on in life.
PREP and LEARN educators are excited to be here at Cal High and provide aid for any students, whether they are incoming freshmen or seniors who are preparing to go beyond California High School. In an interview with the PREP leader, Julianna Gonzalez, she states, “We are open to every student, we are a drop-in program so you don’t have to register for our program. You can just stop on-by for 5 minutes even if you would just like a snack.”. PREP welcomes everyone with open arms so stop by the PREP room today at N-2 and explore their wide variety of clubs and programs!
